Symptoms of Domestic Abuse in Children

Did you know that children from violent homes often display a variety of behavioral characteristics as a result of living in an unpredictable environment? Many of these characteristics are similar to those exhibited by children who have been abused in other ways.

Recent studies show that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 7 boys are sexually abused before they reach the age of 18 years, and that in homes where domestic violence is present, 50% of children living in those homes are abused physically and/or emotionally.

Domestic Violence Statistics

  • On average more than three women a day are murdered by their significant other in the United States.
  • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men aged 18 and older in the United States have been the victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
  • Women are much more likely than men to be victimized by a current or former intimate partner. Women are 84 percent of spouse abuse victims and 86 percent of victims of abuse at the hands of a boyfriend or girlfriend.
  • Women between the ages of 18-24 are most commonly abused by an intimate partner.
  • 19% of domestic violence involves a weapon.

WCYFS cares deeply about the health of its community, supporters, clients and team. Due to rising concerns around the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and recommendations from government agencies, we have made changes to ensure the safety of everyone.

  • Court accompaniment will be on a case-by-case basis at this time.

  • WCYFS’ Youth Drop-In Center is closed to the public, but WCYFS will continue to provide food to youth clients in need. Youth clients are able to pick up food at the California Street Office from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
